The Parlour
The parlour is a warm room full of mementos and moments from years past. It is said that if you sit quietly in the parlour in the afternoon, around 3 p.m., the smell of rosewater can be sensed – a memory of years gone by which lingers in the room. The tin ceiling, with its weathered patina hides a secret. Mr. Harry Loughead, senior, manufacturer of munitions during the First World War, inadvertently let a shotgun blast mar the ceiling. Rather than repair the damage, he instead covered it up with the beautiful ceiling, which remains to this day.
The Kitchen
While all the rooms of the Loughead House are filled with history, the kitchen as the heart of the home speaks to the progress of the families over the years. Originally a galley kitchen, it was expanded over the original coal cellar to sustain the Doherty…then the Loughead…and now our family. We have added to the charm as well as moving this room into the 21st century in a complementary way, keeping the old stove, but adding modern refrigerator, dishwasher and keeping the promise to continue this house on its journey of renovation.
The First Floor Bathroom
Still retaining its heritage touches in bath, sink and bathtub, show how functional the house remains. Plans are in place to bring this to more functional forms, but in its current state it is charming and serves its purpose.
The 2nd Floor Main Bathroom
Fully renovated to appeal to modern requests for plumbing and comfort, still retains the charm of radiators (which heat all areas of the house), old windows and doors, and the unusual layout from years past.
