Welcome to The White Lantern, a getaway that offers more than just a place to sleep—it offers a story. Housed in one of Sarnia’s most storied estates, our B&B invites you to step back into the turn of the 20th century, where industrial tycoons, local politics, and whispers of prohibition-era intrigue collide.
Built in 1900 by eventual Sarnia Mayor Thomas Doherty, this architectural gem has watched over the city for more than 120 years. From the moment you step through our doors, you are surrounded by the craftsmanship of a bygone era—lofty ceilings, intricate original woodworking, and a grandeur that modern builds simply cannot replicate.
But The White Lantern isn’t just about preserving the quiet dignity of the past; it’s about embracing its colourful secrets.
The Bulletproof Parlor
The parlour is a warm room full of mementos and moments from years past. It is said that if you sit quietly in the parlour in the afternoon, around 3 p.m. the smell of rosewater can be sensed – a memory of years gone by which lingers in the room. The tin ceiling, with its weathered patina, hides a secret. Mr. Harry Loughead, senior, manufacturer of munitions during the First World War, inadvertently let a shotgun blast mar the ceiling. Rather than repair the damage, he instead covered it up with the beautiful ceiling, which remains to this day.
